Yu Darvish Passes First and Most Important Test
I’d never heard of a “Welcome to Texas, eat your steak” test. Have you?
I speak, of course, about the traditional “Welcome to Texas, eat your steak” test. I’ve had to take it every time I pass through Texas and I always fail when I get caught up on the mashed potatoes. They’re just so damn buttery.
Two weeks before Darvish signed, he had a meeting with Nolan Ryan. Not needing to see his fastball or mound presence, Ryan just needed to see him eat. It’s how you really know a man.
“In a get-to-know-you dinner at Del Frisco’s, Ryan ordered his usual filet. And Yu Darvish?
“The kid had the onion rings, followed by lobster,” said Ryan. “Then when his steak came out, that thing was so big Secretariat couldn’t have jumped over it. Pretty dang impressive.”
Dear lord, I love a good binge session just like the next guy, but this is absurd. Though I guess when you’re eating on the company dime, live it up.
At least it wasn’t Taco Bell.
